A ghillie suit is a camouflage outfit worn to blend in with the natural environment. Covered in loose strips of cloth or twine, a ghillie suit is designed to break up the outline of a human by appearing as dense foliage. Available in a variety of styles and colors, a ghillie suit can provide the ultimate camouflage for any terrain.
Hunters wear ghillie suits to go undected by game and to get a closer shot. Designed for bow hunting, a bow hunter ghillie suit provides a free range of motion when shooting an arrow.
Airsoft and paintball players wear ghillie suits to act as snipers and conceal themselves from other players. They often wear lighter suits that provide greater mobility and can be easily cleaned. Some models are specifically designed to go over a paintball mask.
Military personnel along with federal and local law enforcement agencies wear ghillie suits to carry out surveillance and tactical operations. They sometimes require heavier ghillie suits that provide more camouflage or sniper ghillie suits designed for crawling long distances.
The outer layers of a ghillie suit are made of strips of burlap or ghillie thread. These outer layers appear as natural vegetation and also create shading within the suit. The shading sharply increases the color contrast of the camouflage pattern and transforms the suit into a virtual illusion. The three-dimensional effect of the ghillie suit distorts the human figure and provides the best outdoor concealment available.
It depends on how you plan to wear it.
If you will be moving around a lot, as in stalking game or playing airsoft, consider a military-style ghillie suit. Military ghillie suits are the most durable and made with Battle Dress Uniforms (BDUs) worn by the armed forces.
Ghille suits are made by attaching synthetic or jute thread to an inner base of nylon netting, lightweight mesh, or a military uniform.

Jute thread is made from the jute plant and is coarser and straighter than synthetic thread. It is the original thread used by the military to construct ghillie suits.
Synthetic thread weighs less than half the weight of jute thread, and used to make lightweight ghillie suits. Synthetic thread is also mildew resistant, fire resistant, odorless, and non-allergenic.
Yes, in fact any ghillie suit can be used for bow hunting. But we recommend you consider trimming some of the ghillie thread around the chest and bow arm area to avoid any interference with your draw. You can read more about customizing your ghillie suit for bow hunting.
